Burning incense could increase cancer risk: UAE study

DUBAI – Do you love burning incense at home? You could increase your chance of developing cancer and cardiovascular disease, a new study in the UAE revealed. According to research by New York University Abu Dhabi, people who are regularly exposed to incense smoke are at greater risk of disease. The study was carried out on 303 Emiratis and published in the international journal, Scientific Reports. According to the study, people exposed to incense had a significant decrease in good mouth bacteria that fights off infections and diseases. Earlier research in China and US also showed a link between lunch cancer and incense burning, however, researchers say the study is still new. Dr Raghib Ali, Director of Public Health Research Center at New York University Abu Dhabi, said that more research is needed to measure the full impact of incense on health. Incense is regarded as an "indoor air pollutant”, researchers said. However, it remains a tradition in Middle East culture. According to research results, 36.6 percent burnt incense five to seven times per week, while 33.7 percent burnt incense at least twice per week.
