Defendant's counsel says client was motivated by 'fatherly and humane' reasons

  DUBAI – The lawyer of a Palestinian businessman who was charged with bribing an Emirati airport officer to allow him to fly to Beirut to see his cancer-stricken nine-year-old son pleaded on Sunday that his client was motivated by "fatherly and humane" reasons to commit the act. Lawyer Nasser Hashem told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi of the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday: "The suspect failed to fly out because of the travel ban that had been imposed on him due to the bounced cheque case...he had issued that cheque against a loan that he took to pay for his son's medication. Informed by doctors that his stem cells were the only ones that matched those of his son, my client was under exceptional pressure that coerced him to behave the way he did in a last-ditch attempt to save his son and despite all that he did, he lost his son." "This is a very rare and unprecedented humane case of its kind.
