Three men obtain duplicate SIM and hack into victim's mobile banking app

  DUBAI – Three Indian nationals were charged in court for stealing Dh1 million from a businessman's bank account using a duplicate SIM that they obtained using forged documents. Court records showed that the suspects - a 38-year-old worker, a 26-year-old mechanic and a 27-year-old friend of the two-managed to obtain a duplicate of the SIM of the victims as they submitted fake papers, hacked into the businessman's mobile banking application and transferred the money into their account. The suspects went to an etisalat outlet where one of them claimed losing a SIM card last May, it was learned. The three men then filled out a form for the replacement of the "lost" SIM and provided the businessman's personal details and phone number. After leaving the outlet, the suspects used the duplicate SIM to access the businessman's bank account through a smartphone app and transferred 1 million dirhams to their account. When the businessman learned that a substantial amount of money had been withdrawn from his account, he was told by his bank that the transfer was made through the businessman's mobile phone application. One of the three Indian nationals who was arrested by the police admitted during interrogation that he and a companion collecting the money in the form of cheques. The three suspects were charged before the Dubai Court of First Instance and were scheduled to enter a plea on Monday. Presiding judge Urfan Omar will sentence the suspects on December 29.
