Pokemon Go craze hits fever pitch in UAE, with players selling their high level accounts to the top bidder   DUBAI – The Pokemon Go craze has hit fever pitch around the world, and some fans of the gaming app in the UAE have stumbled upon an enterprising idea: selling their Pokemon Go account. A search on a UAE-based classifieds website resulted to about 169 ads on Pokemon Go accounts for sale, including one where a level 24 account is being sold for as high as Dh15,000. ExpatMedia.Net on Thursday (August 18) spoke with the owner of the ad who identified himself as Stefan, a 36-year-old sales executive based in Dubai. “I just wanted to see if there was any market to it,” Stefan said, explaining why he had put up the ad. “On ebay, I have seen Pokemon Go accounts actually being auctioned off and sold, so I thought, why not try it in the UAE and see if there are any takers?” Has he gotten any offers yet? “You’re the first to call,” he said, adding that he only put up the ad late in the afternoon and had gone to the beach with his son. Stefan said that his 13-year-old son, Justin, also loves the game. “It’s a very addictive game,” he said, “my son and I spend a lot of time playing, particularly these days when schools are closed. We just hop on the car and drive so it’s easier to catch Pokemon monsters rather than track them on foot, which is going to slow you down.” How long does it take to reach a high-level game? “I can say that levels 1 to 7 can be done in one day, but from level 12 and up, it gets really difficult. From level 20 it can take you days to move on to the next level,” he said. Another Pokemon Go user was selling his level 30 account “for the highest price”. This gamer said his account has 145 Pokemons, including 150,000 stardust, 40 lucky eggs, 200 Pokeballs, 124 great balls, 50 ultra balls, 50 max potion, 1,000 coins, 2,000 combat points (cp) Pokemons and a dragonite at “almost 3,000 cp”. When contacted by ExpatMedia.Net, Ahmad said he would be happy if he could make any sale but that he wasn’t really expecting it. He put up the ad on Thursday to satisfy his curiousity, he said. “I saw people putting ads on the website, so I wanted to try for myself. I was curious if people would actually make an offer for my account,” he said. The 22-year-old Dubai student said, however, that he has not yet gotten any offer. Pokémon Go is based on augmented reality, allowing gamers to catch Pokemon monsters using their smartphones. The game is yet to be officially launched in UAE app stores, although some users have already downloaded it through APK mirrors.
