Cadaver mix-up: Remains of Filipina in Ajman to be repatriated soon

  DUBAI – The body of overseas Filipino worker Febie Layug Guzman will be repatriated soon after the family of the dead Filipina received the wrong remains from the UAE, according to the Philippine Consulate in Dubai and Northern Emirates. Guzman’s grieving family in Pampanga, Philippines received the remains of what a report said were that of an Indonesian woman. The cadaver sent to the Guzmans was actually that of a yet unidentified Muslim Filipina. It is still unclear, however, where or why the cadaver mix-up happened. The report also described Guzman as a Filipina working in Dubai. Guzman, in fact, was a salon worker in Ajman. The 44-year-old arrived in the UAE six years ago. She was found unconscious on the streets of Ajman on November 6, 2016 and rushed to Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Ajman where she died nine days later, said Ray Angulo, a Filipino social worker who handled her case. Guzman’s cause of death is unknown. Her body was released from the morgue this weekend. Guzman’s relative in Dubai has identified her body in the morgue in Ajman and told the media that the family is working with the Philippine Consulate in Dubai and Northern Emirates to repatriate her remains. Guzman is survived by a husband and their three children. Consul-General Paul Raymund Cortes assured that the mission was “closely coordinating with concerned local authorities” on Guzman’s case. “The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Febie Layug Guzman. We assure the Guzman family that we are closely coordinating with the concerned local authorizes and are pursuing all avenues of cooperation, including all legal and diplomatic means, to shed light on this incident and repatriate the remains of Guzman to her family in the Philippines at the soonest possible time,” Cortes said.
