Calls for removal of barrier in deadly Dubai bus crash
DUBAI – A road safety expert in the UAE has joined calls for the removal of a road barrier that was involved in a Dubai bus crash that left 17 people dead.
On June 6, a Mwasalat bus carrying 31 people from Oman to Dubai had rammed into the height barrier near the Al Rashidiya exit off Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, killing 17 people and injuring 13 others.
According to investigation, the 53-year-old Omani driver was speeding and his vision was blocked by a small curtain hung across the top of the windshield.
The court found the driver guilty of the wrongful deaths of 17 and sentenced him to seven years in jail and blood money totaling Dh3.4 million.
Six months after the fatal crash, the height restriction barrier remained in place. Families of victims have called for the barrier to be removed.
The calls were supported by Daniel Albuquerque, assistant professor of transport engineering at UAE University.
Speaking to the media recently, Albuquerque urged authorities to raise the barrier or replace it with something that is designed to break apart on impact.
The expert said that roads should be designed in a way that they are “forgiving to a driver who has an accident".
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has maintained that the barrier passed international safety standards. The RTA declined to comment further on the issue, saying that the case was continuing.
