Commuters in Dubai can now bring e-scooters onboard the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Friday (October 4) that it has lifted the ban on e-scooters in Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram. However, the RTA said there are specific conditions to be met, including that the e-scooters must be foldable in order to be allowed entry into Dubai Metro or Dubai Trams. The authority released a set of 15 rules to ensure safety and order for all passengers using public transportation. RTA's decision to lift the ban comes after months of deliberation, following safety concerns that had led to a temporary suspension of e-scooter usage in March 2024. With the new regulations in place, e-scooters can now be carried onboard the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram, provided that passengers comply with these guidelines. Here are the 15 new rules commuters need to follow when bringing e-scooters on Dubai Metro and Tram: 1. Size limitations: E-scooters must not exceed 120cm x 70cm x 40cm in size and 20kg in weight. 2. Folded at all times: E-scooters must be folded when entering stations, platforms, or while onboard trains/trams. 3. No riding: Riding e-scooters in stations or on footbridges is prohibited. 4. Power off: E-scooters must be turned off during the entire time inside Metro or Tram premises. 5. Clean e-scooters: Wet or dirty e-scooters are not allowed on the premises. 6. Cover protruding parts: Handlebar ends and other parts that could cause injury or damage should be covered. 7. Wide gate usage: E-scooters must be folded and carried through wide gates when entering or exiting Metro stations. 8. No charging allowed: Charging e-scooters on Metro or Tram premises is strictly prohibited. 9. No obstruction: E-scooters must not obstruct doors, seats, aisles, or emergency equipment. 10. Commuter responsibility: Passengers are fully responsible for the safe carriage of their e-scooters. 11. Be alert: Passengers must stay alert and handle their e-scooters in accordance with the rules. 12. No damaged batteries: E-scooters with damaged or defective batteries are not allowed. 13. No dual batteries: E-scooters with dual batteries are prohibited. 14. Environmental safety: E-scooters emitting environmental contaminants are banned. 15. Certified batteries: Batteries must comply with international safety standards such as UL or IEC. Commuters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new rules and ensure their e-scooters meet all standards before bringing them onboard Dubai’s public transport.
