Pay for bus trips using plastic bottles

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport has started a program to encourage public transport passengers to earn free trips on public buses by collecting points using empty plastic bottles. The program is made possible in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD), the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre. In the first phase of the "Points for Plastic: the Bus Tariff" initiative, plastic deposit machines will be installed in Abu Dhabi's main bus station. This machine will allow passengers to exchange empty plastic containers for points. A single small bottle (600 ml or less) is worth 1 point, while larger containers or bottles exceeding 600 ml are worth 2 points. Each point corresponds to 10 fils. Hence, a total of 10 points are equivalent to Dh1. Points can be accumulated and transferred to the "Hafilat" Personalized Bus Card, an ITC automated payment system that calculates the fare needed for the trip. The Bus Card system automatically deducts the amount from the cash value stored on the card using tariff machines located at bus entrances and exits.
