Mustang stolen in Dubai ends up in Oman

DUBAI – A Dubai resident has warned car owners to be wary of scammers after he discovered his Mustang—which was stolen by a bogus buyer—advertised in Oman. Stephen Kitching said the bogus buyer gave him a cheque for Dh360,000 for his Mustang Shelby GT500. He later discovered that the buyer dated the cheque for 2025 in Arabic. Kitching, a 54-year-old Dubai resident from the UK, said that he was initially contacted by a woman after he advertised his car for sale through a website. “She wanted to make an offer for the car on behalf of her husband,” Kitching told The National. He said the woman agreed to pay her with a banker’s draft cheque, but that when her husband showed up, the latter couldn’t produce the cheque and claimed he worked at an army station. Kitching said that he and the male buyer headed to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) centre to transfer the ownership of the car. He said the man behaved “very controlled and authoritative”. "Then we went outside, and he took out his chequebook and wrote me a cheque in Arabic,” he told The National. The car was then loaded onto a transporter and taken away. Kitching said he only realized later that he was scammed after checking the cheque and noticing that it was dated 2025 in Arabic. He also found out that a car strikingly similar to his car had been advertised for sale in Oman. He believes it is the same car that he lost to the scammer. Dubai Police did not comment on the case but have repeatedly warned motorists in the past to be careful with scammers posing as car buyers. ICA/Expat Media
