Firm anticipates operations at Dubai, Al Maktoum airports to be at their busiest at the end of classes and during Ramadan

  DUBAI – Emirates Group subsidiary dnata expects cargo operations and ground travel services at Dubai's two airports to reach their peak this month with the end of classes and Eid holidays coming up. Retailers, on the other hand, foresee items with the Eid theme sell briskly this month as well. Steve Allen, divisional senior vice president for UAE airport operations at dnata, said their cargo operations and ground travel services usually reach a feverish pace when schools end their classes and during the Ramadan holidays. Allen said during the same period last year, their company handled more than 14 million passengers or 237,000 passengers daily at the Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This year, Allen said they expect to handle about 14.9 million passengers or nearly 253,000 passengers a day in both airports. As regards cargo operations, Bernd Struck, dnata senior vice president for UAE cargo and DWC airline services division, said: "We are anticipating cargo volume to grow this year also as there is a significant surge in imports of perishable goods and e-commerce business during this period." Last year, dnata handled 59,847 tons of cargo - a three percent-increase over the 2015 figure. Based on their forecast, Struck said they expect to have handled a combined total of 64,000 tons of cargo at the two airports last May, an increase of eight percent compared to same period last year. With regard sales of Eid-themed items at duty-free shops, Hugo Van Der Schaegh, general manager at the travel retail branding and design agency ODG in Dubai, said: "Eid is a gift-giving period and what motivates people to buy from duty free is value for money, and customised products such as jewelry linked to Eid."
