Tribunal finds man "narcissistic, psychologically incapable of doing spousal duties'

  DUBAI – The Cassation Court granted a petition for divorce filed by a Filipino woman because her husband was suffering from narcissism and also psychologically incapable of carrying out marital responsibilities. The petitioner, who is a mother of two, sought the annulment of her marriage as she claimed that her husband failed to disclose that he was suffering fom narcissism and was mentally incapable of carrying out his spousal duties. The woman's lawyer, Hamda Makki, said her client had many disputes with her husband and had become unbearable to live with. The woman first filed the annulment petition before the Dubai Personal Status Court for non-Muslims and the case was referred to the Family Guidance and Reconciliation Section but a settlement could not be reached between the woman and her husband. Makki said her client demanded that the defendant pay Dh8,000 as monthly allowance for their children and Dh120,000 for housing, school, maid and furniture expenses. The Personal Status Court however rejected the annulment petition, prompting the woman and her lawyer to go to the appeal court but the appellate tribunal upheld the earlier judgment. The woman, along with her lawyer, then brought the case before the Cassation Court and asked that the Philippines' family law be implemented. Makki told the Cassation Court, "My client had discovered at a later stage that her husband had had a previous marriage annulled in their homeland because he suffers from narcissism. He had also been subject to a clinical test that proved that his disease is incurable hence we ask the court to implement the Family Law of the Philippines and have the marriage contract annulled. The Cassation Court acted in favor of the annulment petition and told the defendant to pay court fees.
