Boxer bashed online for beating up old man

  CEBU CITY – Instead of showing his might on the ring, a 22-year-old professional boxer reportedly beat up a 63-year-old man in Cebu last week after the latter tried to break up a street fight between two boys. CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media and sparked criticism and calls for tougher punishment for the 22-year-old, whom witnesses and family members of the victim identified as Ardie Boyose. The nearly 8-minute video shows the 63-year-old man, identified only by his pet name Liklik, appearing to stop the street fight between the two boys when a man wearing a red polo shirt and khaki shorts intervened. The two appeared to have a heated discussion before the younger man shoved the older man, causing the latter to fall but get back up to retaliate with a punch. The senior citizen was seen in the video briefly leaving the scene, returning a few minutes later carrying an object that he used to hit the boxer. The two exchanged several blows after this. The video was first posted on social media by Ritch Gallares, who identified herself as a relative of the 63-year-old victim. In her Facebook post, Gallares said that Boyose was summoned to the community office where he admitted committing the wrongdoing after he was shown the CCTV footage of the incident. “Halos magpakiluoy iyang mama nga dili lang siya ikiha (His mother pleaded that they don’t sue him),” Gallares said. Both parties reportedly reached a settlement, but that the elderly man sustained injuries that kept him bedridden for two days. On social media, Gallares’ video has been shared nearly 10,000 times as of this writing, with nearly 200 comments from netizens, many of them calling for jail time and a lawsuit for the errant boxer. “Ipa preso na… tangtang license ana pagka boxer. Boyose’s sister, Lynne Pumar, reacted to the comments in the same post, saying: “You should know every side of the story before judging.”‬ She also wrote a similar message on her Facebook page.
