Known for its breathtaking beaches, historic landmarks, and vibrant culture, Cebu City has secured the third spot on the list of the world’s most affordable cities for living your best life, according to a global ranking by Finance Buzz via Seasia Stats. Bari in Italy and Cape Town in South Africa took the first and second spots, respectively. Cebu City, the capital of Cebu island in the Philippines, stands out as the only Southeast Asian city in the global top 5, a recognition that reflects not just its cost-effectiveness but its exceptional lifestyle offerings. Falling behind Cebu City is New Zealand's Hamilton City in top 4, and Vietnam's Hanoi in top 5. Often called the “Queen City of the South,” Cebu City offers a unique blend of urban convenience and coastal charm. The city is accessible via the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and is celebrated for its balance of economic growth, cultural festivities, and warm community spirit. Cebu City is the largest city in Cebu, a Philippine province home to the famous Sinulog Festival, held every January in honor of the Sto. Niño (Child Jesus). During Sinulog, the streets of Cebu City come alive with dancers in colorful costumes, parades, and a spiritual celebration that attracts crowds from across the world—including in Dubai, where a large Filipino community holds its own Sinulog celebrations annually. Adding to Cebu’s international profile, Thomas Markle Sr., father of the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, reportedly relocated to the city earlier this year. UK media reported that he now lives in a high-rise apartment there, describing his new home as "upscale". “I travelled in that part of the world when I was a younger man. The people are so kind and welcoming, and they are respectful to older people,” Markle Sr. said in an interview. “At 80, it is time to go somewhere where the people are lovely, and I can enjoy a quieter, friendlier existence.” Cebu has long attracted notable personalities. World-renowned furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue calls the city home, as do celebrities like Ellen Adarna, Kim Chiu, Erich Gonzales, and Enrique Gil—who recently performed in Dubai. Actor Matteo Guidicelli and social media power couple Kriz Uy and Slater Young are also based in Cebu. Cebu is also the birthplace of the late music icon Pilita Corrales and actress Annabelle Rama. It also drew Manila-based stars like Donna Cruz and Kaye Abad to settle in Cebu after marrying into prominent Cebuano families. Kaye Abad, now raising her two sons in Cebu, said: “I love it here in Cebu. Very laidback, simple life… 'Yung buhay na pinangarap ko, natupad lahat dito. Hindi ako artista dito.” Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton and his Cebuana wife also maintain restaurants in both Cebu and Dubai, reflecting the city’s rising culinary appeal.
