Vessel that damaged Cebu shoal given OK to sail to Subic

  CEBU CITY - The vessel that ran aground and destroyed a huge portion of the Monad Shoal in Daanbantayan, Cebu, has been allowed to set sail to Subic for repairs. At least two hectares of the Monad Shoal was damaged after MV Belle rose crashed into the shore last month. The vessel, which is docked at Naga City, will be sailing to Subic where it will undergo repairs after running aground last month. Ship owner, Crest Ocean Traders SA, gave the Cebu Provincial government a guarantee letter that the company will pay $1.5 million for the rehabilitation of the damaged area. Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III signed a letter allowing MV Belle Rose to sail out of Cebu province on Friday (July 1) after receiving Crest Ocean Traders SA’s guarantee letter. Pedrito Faytaren Jr., the legal counsel of Crest Ocean Traders SA, said the ship is covered by insurance from the Japan Ship Owner's Mutual Protection and Indemnity Club, which will provide the guarantee funds. Faytaren explained, however, that the amount is the maximum amount that the company could offer to cover expenses for the rehabilitation of the shoal and to fund projects for affected fishermen in the area. Project management office to be set up Meanwhile, Baltazar Tribunalo of the Task Force Monad Shoal, said that the funds will be released as soon as they have signed the compromise agreement and created the project management office that will oversee the implementation of the programs for Monad Shoal. The funds, once released to the Cebu Provincial Government, will go to its trust fund and will be allotted specifically for the rehabilitation of Monad Shoal. The liquidation of funds will be handled by the provincial government, Tribunalo said.
