Cebu students launch anti-discrimination campaign

  CEBU CITY - Student leaders from different universities gathered together to launch a campaign against discriminatory policies in schools. The Anti-Discrimination Students' Congress (ADSC) that was held on Saturday (October 1) at the Rizal Library in Osmeña, Cebu, is part of efforts to protect students who are lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgendered, persons with disabilities, and other disadvantaged groups against discrimination. The congress is a joint project between the Cebu City Government and the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP) to include the youth and students in implementing the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of 2012. The ordinance emphasizes against the discrimination of people on the basis of disability, age, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity, ethnicity and religion. "Our schools should be safe spaces against all forms of discrimination," Student Council Alliance of the Philippines Visayas Coordinator Justine Balane said. "Schools shape active citizens when students are liberated and not repressed." Balane will be sitting as youth representative to the Anti-Discrimination Commission, the preparatory body that will implement the ordinance. SCAP cites initial reports of discrimination in campuses where transgendered students are barred from entry in schools because of dress codes. In some cases, students are even discriminated based on their religion. “My friend was wearing her hijab when the guard asked her to take it off because school rules didn’t permit it,” Carla Jalbuna, one of the speakers, said when citinF her experiences of discrimination. Reports of discriminatory policies also include providing inferior services to students on the basis of disability or health status. The congress will soon produce a paper to aid schools in adopting inclusive policies for students. The congress was attended by students from different colleges and universities in Cebu City. Former Councilor Alvin Dizon, the author of the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance said that "every student should grow in an environment where everyone is free and equal". The speakers present were notable Anti-Discrimination advocates including Councilor Margarita Osmeña, Chairperson of Cebu United Rainbow LGBTIQ Sector (CURLS) Magdalena Robinson, LGBT Human Rights Advocate Carla Jalbuna.
