Cecile Yasay lauds distance-learning program for Filipino teachers in Laos

  VIENTIANE, LAOS – A distance-learning program for Laos-based Filipino teachers is worth replicating in other countries, said Cecile Yasay, wife of Department Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Perfecto Yasay, Jr on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Minister’s Meeting in the city of Vientiane. The program enables Filipino teachers in Laos who do not have a degree in Education to earn a diploma so that they can be full-fledged, accredited educators. On Saturday (July 23), Yasay observed the distance-learning program of International Technology Management Corp. (INTEM), in partnership with Bago City College. The program was designed largely by INTEM CEO and President Dr. Bernadette Gonzales, who is also a consultant for the Ministry of Education in Laos. Under the program, participants can choose a suitable course: the Bachelor of Education Program for undergraduates; the Teacher’s Certificate for Professionalism 1, which allows college degree holders to acquire 18 units of Education subjects to qualify for the Philippine Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET); and Teacher’s Certificate for Professionalism 2, where participants get 18 Education units in order to acquire a diploma in teaching. Yasay expressed her amazement on how the Filipino community in Laos was able to come up with a professional development program. She also conducted an online chat with Dr. Glenda Manoso, Dean of the Education Department of Bago City College, who said that some recipients of the programme are scheduled to take the LET in September. “This is a good collaborative effort of overseas workers. Even if you already have jobs, you still want to pursue professional development in your chosen careers,” Yasay said.
