Dubai launches e-platform for public to name roads, streets

Residents now have the chance to name roads and streets in Dubai with the launch of the Road Naming Suggestions Platform on Thursday (July 4). The online platform is managed by the Dubai Road Naming Committee under the supervision of Dubai Municipality. The public can propose names for roads and streets via roadsnaming.ae “The platform aims to enable public participation in proposing names for roads and streets across Dubai. This is in line with the Committee’s objectives of preserving the legacy of the past, promoting civilization, staying updated with the Emirate’s future development, and highlighting its achievements of high value,” according to Dubai Municipality. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, said that the platform is part of the efforts and plans of the Integrated Committee to promote community participation. Al Hajri said there are specific criteria for a suggested name to be picked, adding it must “reflect our identity and interrelationship between past, present and future of Dubai.” The Dubai Road Naming Committee has devised a method for proposing names based on specific classifications, which include names linked to Arabic and Islamic design and architecture, along with names associated to art, culture and Arabic poetic prosody. Names related to natural phenomena, local plants, trees, flowers, marine, and wild plants, wild and marine birds are also welcome. Additionally, the classification covers names related to environmental sustainability, ships, marine tools, fishing, winds, rain, faming, agriculture, artisan art and tools, inventions, modern technology and gemstones. Classifications will further include names of squares, forts, ancient castles, archaeological sites, local and ancient jewelry, and horse and Arabian camel. ICA/Expat Media
