In Dubai, motorists must get a licensed car number plate for their vehicle. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) allows motorists to change their number plates easily. This guide walks you through the essential steps, eligibility, and required documents.

Eligibility and documents

To be eligible for changing your vehicle's plate number, you must belong to one of the following categories: UAE citizens, residents, GCC nationals, companies, diplomatic bodies, or governmental entities. The documents required vary depending on your category. For most applicants, the original Emirates ID is necessary. Commercial and free zone companies need to provide a letter from their organisation, while a letter from Dubai Police is required if you've lost your current plate.

Lost car plates

If you have lost your car plate, you can apply for a replacement through the RTA website. First, you must report the loss to the Dubai Police and obtain a "Lost Item Certificate." With this police report, visit an RTA customer service centre to apply for a replacement plate. The fee for replacing each lost plate is Dh200. It's crucial to note that if both plates are lost while you are abroad, you cannot drive the vehicle back to the UAE. You must present the police report to the RTA for further instructions.

Service fees and application process

The cost of changing a number plate ranges from Dh25 for a motorcycle short plate to Dh500 for a luxury plate. Other options include short plates for Dh35, long plates for Dh50, and various branded plates ranging from Dh100 to Dh200. The process can be initiated through multiple RTA channels, including the RTA website, Customer Happiness Centres, and vehicle registration and inspection centres. Online applications yield instant results, while in-person applications take approximately eight minutes. Upon completion, you will receive a new vehicle ownership certificate and two new vehicle plates. It's important to note that you must settle any outstanding traffic fines before applying and hand over your old plates to receive the new ones. Ensure that either you or a legal representative is present during the application process. Even if your residence visa or Emirates ID was issued in another emirate, you can still apply for a plate change as long as your documents are valid.
