The airline’s “weight reference standard” has sparked controversy and outcry on social media since it was announced earlier this month. Critics have slammed the airline for focusing on the cabin crew’s weight instead of expertise and quality of service. According to local media reports, Hainan Airlines will calculate weight requirements based on an individual’s height. Those who exceed their required weight by up to five percent will have their weight monitored and reviewed. Individuals who exceed the weight “standard” by 10 percent or more will face suspension and be placed on a supervised “weight reduction plan” by the company.
