After a dramatic win, Coco Gauff showed why she remains one of tennis’ most relatable stars. Addressing a largely Filipino crowd at Dubai Tennis Stadium on Wednesday (February 18), Gauff laughed and said, “I know you guys probably here for Alex, so I’m sorry to make you wait!” The crowd had been eagerly anticipating the next match featuring Alex Eala at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Gauff knew it, and she embraced it. “But if I’m not mistaken, I think some of you guys were cheering for me, so I appreciate it a lot,” she added. “I hope you guys enjoy the next match, but thank you for cheering for me for now!” It was a lighthearted moment that showed her respect for the Filipina rising star and the fans who filled the stadium. The connection between Gauff and Eala goes beyond this tournament. The two teamed up in doubles at the Italian Open in May last year, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Italian pair Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. On court in Dubai, Gauff also reflected on her tough match. “The whole match, it wasn’t going my way. But I tried to stay in it. I fought for every point. I’m happy today that I was able to get the result.” She even pointed to American flags in the stands. “There is an American flag over there!
