Motorists traveling along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) encountered an unusual sight on Tuesday evening (January 21) when two empty coffins fell onto the highway near the Pulilan Exit. The incident, which occurred at around 7pm, caused a minor traffic jam and left drivers momentarily startled. Noel Luartes, a motorist who witnessed the incident, described the moment he and his family saw the coffins sprawled on the road. “I was coming from San Fernando, heading home to Pulilan, Bulacan with my family when we saw the coffins,” Luartes told Inquirer in Filipino on Wednesday (January 22). The coffins appeared to have fallen from the top of an L300 van, according to Luartes. “It looked like an L300 van, with the coffins loaded on top,” he added. NLEX management confirmed the details, stating that the coffins were found near the Candaba 3rd Viaduct on the southbound lane. Robin Ignacio, head of NLEX Traffic Operations, assured the public that the coffins were empty and that the driver later returned to claim them. Further investigation revealed that the falling coffins caused minor damage to an SUV traveling behind the van. The driver of the van later met with the SUV owner at a designated rest area to address the matter. “They reached an agreement, and the issue has already been settled,” Ignacio confirmed. This bizarre incident drew attention online as photos and videos of the coffins circulated on social media. While some netizens expressed concern, others couldn’t help but inject humor into the situation, jokingly calling it a “highway horror story.” NLEX management assured the public that additional measures would be taken to prevent such incidents, including stricter cargo checks at toll gates.
