34 cafeterias shut down in Sharjah
DUBAI - Thousands of cafeterias in Sharjah serve food to thousands of customers on a daily basis but not all of them have hygienic practices.
This year alone, more than 300 establishments were found to have failed to meet hygiene standards and 34 outlets were shut down over unhygienic practices.
What is the most common hygiene violation in food outlets?
Omar Al Muhairi, head of the food control department at Sharjah Municipality, said there are two.
“The most common violation carried out in food outlets was the lack of commitment to wear hairnets and gloves when handling food,” Al Muhairi said.
The malpractice is usually prevalent among shawarma shops, forcing Sharjah to impose new regulations on selling of sharwarmas.
Cooks handling shawarmas are required to follow hygiene rules, such as washing hands with soap and water and avoiding smoking when handling shawarma.
The Sharjah Municipality has imposed 3,345 fines imposed across a number of establishments and said that food outlets that were shut down will not be reopened until they have met health and safety standards.
