Confirmed: Emirates to lay off employees amid Covid-19 crisis

  DUBAI – Dubai-based Emirates airline confirmed on Sunday (May 31) it is going to lay off employees due to the economic impact of Covid-19. Emirates’ statement came two months after Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Group, announced salary cuts in an effort to avoid laying off staff. “Rather than ask employees to leave the business, we chose to implement a temporary basic salary cut as we want to protect our workforce and keep our talented and skilled people, as much as possible,” Sheikh Ahmed said in March. On Sunday, Emirates said the job cuts it has been trying to avoid was now necessary. "The current pandemic has impacted many industries around the world and although we have endeavored to sustain the current family as is, we reviewed all possible scenarios in order to sustain our business operations, but have come to the conclusion that we unfortunately have to say goodbye to a few of the wonderful people that worked with us," the airline said in a statement carried by the Dubai Government media office. Emirates did not reveal how many employees will be affected by the layoff, but said that those who will be made redundant will be treated "with fairness and respect." "We will work with impacted employees to ensure they are looked after and taken care of with necessary means," according to Emirates. Emirates’ yearly revenue fell by six percent to Dh92 billion due to the temporary suspension of passenger flights in March. Earlier this month, airport services company Dnata also confirmed it has let go of a “very substantial number of employees” amid the Covid-19 crisis. Dnata is part of Emirates Group, which also comprises of Emirates airline.
