Gas cylinders to be banned in new buildings in the UAE

  DUBAI - Residents moving into new buildings in the UAE will not be allowed to use cooking gas cylinders as the country begins strictly implementing the new rule. The UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice has reportedly been updated to ban cooking gas cylinders in all new buildings. The Preventive Safety Department at the General Directorate of the Dubai Civil Defence will reportedly stop issuing permits to new buildings if they allow occupants to use LPG cylinders. The move is an attempt to reduce fire accidents caused by gas leakage and cylinder explosions. Authorities want new building to be equipped with a centralised gas pipe network, or allow occupants to use electric cookers. Earlier this year, a gas cylinder explosion at an apartment in Al Khail Gate led to the death of an elderly woman. Her daughter was also critically injured in the August 24 incident.
