Tribunal cites lack of corroborated evidence in clearing defendants

  DUBAI – The Court of First Instance has acquitted seven jobless Pakistani nationals who were accused of breaking into a grocery store and stealing cash from the register as well as four mobile phones in January last year. The court cited the lack of corroborated evidence to convict the defendants, four of whom had pleaded not guilty to charges of theft filed against them while the three other defendants were not brought before the court. Court records said an Indian vendor called the police when he discovered the grocery store's front door had been destroyed when he arrived to open the establishment. Police investigation led to the arrest of the seven jobless Pakistani men who were allegedly involved in a series of robberies in the past. Prosecutors accused the defendants of allegedly using a crowbar to destroy the steel shutter and break the lock and the glass door, after which the defendants allegedly got cash from the register, four mobile phones worth Dh300 and Dh100 from a donation box. According to the store vendor, police "examined the surveillance cameras that showed a suspect, who wore a cap, and another one before they stole cash, phones and (money from) a donation box." A police sergeant, on the other hand, said the suspects were apprehended for alleged involvement in previous theft incidents. "Upon questioning one of the suspects, he admitted to me that they went together to Al Satwa area and stole cash and phones after breaking into the store. He also told me they had robbed several shops in the same way when two of them would break in the store and the rest would keep an eye outside," the policeman said.
