Jail for duo caught hugging, kissing inside washroom of gas station by attendant

  DUBAI – The Dubai Cassation Court upheld a one-month jail term meted on an Egyptian man and a Moroccan woman who were caught kissing and hugging in a female washroom of a gas station by an attendant last December. Court records showed that the gas station attendant checked on the pair after noting that they had spent more than 10 miniutes inside the washroom and then he saw the defendants locked in an embrace and kissing. The gas station employee then reported what he saw to his supervisor who in turn informed the police. The defendants were told to get out of the washroom, arrested and charged with public indecency before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court. The pair pleaded not guilty to the public indecency charge but the woman admitted having drunk liquor at a nightclub where she worked. The man, on the other hand, was charged by prosecutors for cross-dressing, which the court dismissed. The Misdemeanours Court meted a one-month jail sentence on the pair while the woman was fined Dh2,000 for consuming alcohol. The defendants appealed the verdict before the appellate court where they still pleaded not guilty to public indecency. The Egyptian man's lawyer said his client did not hug or kiss the Moroccan woman and asked the appeal court to reject the statements of the witness because of inconsistency and for being based on malice. But the appellate tribunal upheld their jail sentence, prompting the defendants to go to the Cassation Court. The Cassation Court however affirmed the jail sentence on the pair and ordered their deportation after serving time in prison.
