Emirati who starved maid to death: appeal verdict out

  DUBAI – The Dubai Appeal Court has shortened a seven-year jail sentence meted on an Emirati woman who was convicted by the criminal court of beating and starving her Indonesian maid to death. The appellate tribunal ruled that the convict will spend three years in jail instead. The Dubai Criminal Court had convicted the 61-year-old defendant in September 2015 of detaining and starving the maid to death. Police arrested the woman after her sibling found the maid's body inside a room in the house of the defendant in Bur Dubai. "When we arrived we found the dead body on the floor in her room. Although there was a bed, she was fully dressed and in her hijab and the room was tidy and clean. The defendant was very nervous," said an Emirati police officer, who added that they became suspicious when they found a trail of blood on the stairs in the house. "We asked the defendant what happened. She said the maid fell and refused to answer any of our questions, she told us not to ask her anything," the policeman said. During the criminal court hearing on the case filed against the woman, a policeman said he found the door, cabinet, drawer and even the refrigerator locked. "Whenever we wanted to open a drawer or a cabinet, the woman would reach for a big key chain in her pocket. She kept repeating that it was private property and she needed to protect it," the officer said. Medical examination conducted on the maid's body showed that she was beaten before dying of extreme hunger. "She starved to death and subjected to severe beating. The examination showed that she was apparently given some food to prevent her death but since the condition was severe, the attempt to save her life failed," the coroner said. Police records showed that the defendant had been the subject of several complaints for abuse of maids and a request was submitted to the Naturalization and Residency Department that she be banned from employing maids. The defendant denied the charges against her but the criminal court then sentenced her to jail for seven years until the appellate tribunal ruled that the convict will spend three years in jail instead.
