Russian defendant slept with dead lover for a night before calling the police

DUBAI – The Dubai Cassation Court has affirmed a 15-year jail sentence imposed on a 35-year-old Russian woman who stabbed dead her Palestinian boyfriend after he rejected her marriage proposal. Aside from upholding the prison sentence on the defendant, Presiding Judge Mustafa Al Shennawi ordered the deportation of the woman after she serves her jail sentence. The court's decision came even as the woman pleaded not guilty and sought a shorter prison term on grounds of leniency. The woman claimed that she did not mean to kill her boyfriend and that she only acted in self-defense after he purportedly assaulted her. In the August 2014 incident, the defendant claimed that she was too intoxicated when she stabbed her boyfriend thrice in the chest and then slept beside his body before calling the police the following day. A police officer testified in court that the woman was drunk when she returned to the flat and stabbed her boyfriend who was asleep at that time. "She said she slept on his chest till noon when she called the police," said the police lieutenant. Another policeman testified that the defendant indeed reported that she had killed someone. "I spoke to her over the phone since she reported to us that she had killed someone. She was devastated and her right arm was covered with a blood-soaked bandage. she opened the door when I arrived there. She was sitting on the floor while holding the victim's legs. She said she loved him and that she had lent him money and bought him two cars but he refused to marry her. She said that she discovered that he was married and had been exploiting her financially as he took between Dh10,000 and Dh20,000 from her every now and then." "When the incident happened, the accused said they had a heated argument over their relationship. Then each of them left for a bar and consumed liquor. She claimed that when she returned to the flat after 90 minutes she had another fight with the victim over the money she had given to him," said the policeman.
