Plans underway for six Negros Island Region protected areas

  CEBU CITY – A crackdown on illegal fishing is being proposed as management plans for six Negros Island Region (NIR) protected areas are set to be implemented before the end of 2016, local and environment officials said. NIR officials and civil society organisations recently convened to pursue initiatives and craft policies to protect and sustainably manage NIR terrestrial and marine protected areas in Apo Island Protected Landscape and Seascape; Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park; Mount Kanlaon Natural Park; Northern Negros Natural Park; Sagay Marine Reserve; and Tañon Strait Protected Seascape. Gloria Estenzo Ramos, Vice President of Oceana Philippines, said the group shared initiatives to “end illegal and destructive fishing in Tañon Strait, in partnership with LGUs, other civil society organizations and fishers’ groups”. “We also used this opportunity to present the story of our ‘ocean heroes,’ lobby for the adoption of vessel monitoring mechanism to deter illegal fishing and monitor vessels in protected areas… to achieve sustainable fisheries management and effective conservation and protection of terrestrial and marine protected areas,” said Ramos.
