Crackdown on overcrowding in Dubai’s JLT apartments

  DUBAI – Authorities have put the scanner on overcrowding in Dubai’s Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT), with community managers given 30 days to report violators. In a circular, the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) ordered owners association managers to conduct a full investigation into each residential unit in 30 days or face sanctions and fines. The DMCC wants the investigation to include the names of each occupant, the owner of the apartment, email address, telephone and mobile numbers and a list of apartments suspected of overcrowding. The DMCC said it is aware that “a number of residential units across JLT are being improperly utilised as multiple occupancy units by employers located both within and outside the community to accommodate their employees”. The body said that it also received complaints from JLT residents who said the “occurrences of overcrowding has resulted in significant disruption to the community”. Under freehold property rules in Dubai, only one person per 200 square feet is allowed to occupy an apartment, or a maximum of three occupants per studio, five occupants per one-bedroom apartment and seven occupants in a two-bedroom apartment.
