  MADRID – Real Madrid's superstar player Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by Spanish prosecutors with tax evasion by allegedly defrauding the Spanish government of US$16.4 million in tax for four years. But Gestifute, an agency representing the 32-year-old Portuguese captain, said there was no attempt by Ronaldo to evade taxes as the firm described the case as a "complex one." The prosecutor's office said in a statement that Ronaldo set up a "business structure" in 2010 to allegedly hide from Spain's treasury revenue he earned from his image rights and described the offense as "voluntary" and "conscious". Ronaldo became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010 and, in November 2011, opted to follow the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreigners working in the country, the statement also said. Ronaldo is the world's highest-paid athlete, according to Forbes.
