Cruise control fail on Abu Dhabi highway, driver saved

DUBAI – A man whose car’s cruise control failed as he was driving at 130kmph narrowly missed death, thanks to the quick action of UAE police. The motorist was driving on Sheikh Maktoum Street in the Al Rahba area when he realized that his brakes had stopped working, police said. Petrified, he called the Abu Dhabi Police for help. Police were able to track him down as he was driving towards Dubai, while police patrol cars cleared the road ahead. “The driver was contacted on phone and advised to calm down. He was then given suggestions to help him stop the vehicle, but to no avail," said Captain Issa Al Ghafli, Director of the Traffic Section at Al Rahba Police Station. Al Ghafli said that a police patrol car drove in front of the speeding vehicle to let it bump into the patrol car and slow it down to a halt. No one was injured in the incident and the motorist was provided with necessary assistance, Al Ghafli said. Cruise control malfunctions on UAE highways are rare, but there have been several reported incidents in the last few years. Drivers who encounter such problem are generally advised to attempt to slow down the malfunctioning car by shifting the gear to neutral and slowly apply the hand break. If this fails, drivers are advised to remain calm and call for police assistance.
