'Cube' grand mosque to open in Dubai

DUBAI – A massive Grand Mosque in Dubai’s financial district is scheduled to open in 2019, officials said. The DIFC Grand Mosque is located at Gate Avenue at Dubai Financial Centre (DIFC) and can accommodate more than 500 people. The state-of-the-art mosque is accessible 24 hours from street level through elevators and escalators.

What to expect

The mosque sits on 14,500 square feet and is designed as a simple cube within a cube. The mosque's interior, however, isn't quite as minimal as its exterior design. Inside, the mosque has an expansive main chandelier inspired by traditional Muqarnas. The mosque's facade uses a hanging screen that provides shade and privacy to certain areas and opens at public areas. When the screen is lifted, visitors can see the intricate detail of the mosque' interior from the outside. The screen is mostly open around the main prayer hall and becomes more solid around the services areas.
