Cyclone Shaheen: Rain, flash floods forecast in UAE

  DUBAI – Parts of the UAE will experience rain and flash floods on Sunday evening (October 3)as Cyclone Shaheen moves closer to nearby Oman, according to the weather bureau. According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the centre of the cyclone is 440km away from the coast of Fujairah. Cyclone Shaheen is forecast to head towards the Oman coast, and by Sunday afternoon, parts of the UAE will be affected, including Al Ain and the southern and central regions. The weather forecaster said the cyclone will bring “rains of different intensity that lead to the flash flooding in the valleys and torrents and water will accumulate over some low areas”. Cyclone Shaheen is predicted to intensify into a category 1 tropical cyclone. UAE authorities have issued a warning to residents to avoid beaches, wadis and mountainous areas. UAE authorities have announced that schools in several areas will have distance learning on October 3 and 4 as a precautionary measure.
