Dead stingrays wash up on Dubai beach

DUBAI – Beachgoers were shocked to find up to 20 dead stingrays that washed up on the beach in Dubai. The stingrays were discovered on Monday morning at Sunset Beach near the Burj Al Arab. Beachgoers said many of the stingrays bore gashes that suggest they may have been earlier caught in nets. According to marine experts who surveyed the scene, the stingrays were likely dumped by fishermen who were trying to catch other fish. Dubai resident Claire Falconer, in an Instagram post, said some of the stingrays were "either dead or dying" and "covered in blood and scratches and they were too exhausted to even live." "The assumption is that these beautiful rays where caught in illegal fishing nets, and then dumped and left for dead - as fishermen have no use for them," she said. The UAE has strict laws against over fishing and illegal use of nets in UAE waters.
