Second explosive found in another station but authorities managed to defuse bomb

MOSCOW - Eleven people were killed while dozens were wounded in an explosion at the St. Petersburg metro station in what Russian authorities believe is "an act of terror". A train packed with passengers was traveling between two stations in the city, the second largest in Russia, when a blast tore through it. The incident has prompted a shutdown of the metro system. No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing so far. Russian Anti-Terrorism Committee revealed that a second explosive was found by authorities at another metro station – Revolutionary Square - and was quickly defused. It was hidden in a fire extinguisher and carried a kilogram of TNT. Three Russian news agencies reported 10 fatalities but the health ministry said there were 11. The health ministry also said at least 36 people were injured in the blast, six of whom had critical injuries. The blast occurred while President Vladimir Putin was in St. Petersburg. After the explosion, Putin went to the metro station and laid flowers at a makeshift memorial for the victims. Putin said the incident is being investigated and the terror angle is not being discounted but Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has already declared the bombing as a "terrorist act." Investigation showed that the explosion occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on Monday as the train was traveling from Sennaya Ploshchad to Tekhnologichesky Institut stations. The Anti-Terrorism Committee said the train's conductor "saved lives" because rather than stop the train after the explosion occurred, he continued to the next station to let passengers off and allow rescuers to attend to victims.
