Deadly Dubai bus crash: Indian student gets Dh5 million compensation

A 24-year-old Indian student received Dh5 million in compensation after suffering brain damage in a bus crash that killed 17 people in Dubai in 2019. Muhammad Baig Mirza was among 13 people who were injured when the Dubai-Muscat bus crashed into a height barrier on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road on June 6, 2019. Mirza was returning from Muscat after spending Eid there with his mother’s family. He was among 31 passengers of the bus when it crashed. Among those killed were 17 Indians, including a model, and an Oman-based Filipina visiting Dubai. The badly injured Mirza was unconscious for 14 days in Dubai’s Rashid Hospital where he received treatment for two months. He sustained severe injuries to his skull, lungs, ears, mouth, arms and legs and suffered 50 percent brain damage. Mirza, who is from Hyderabad, was initially awarded Dh1 million in compensation last March. The family appealed and the amount was raised to Dh5 million. Easa Anees, director at FranGulf legal consultants, called it a “record-breaking compensation” awarded to an expat in a motor vehicle accident case. The court ordered the insurance company to pay the compensation to the victim, and the cheque was handed over earlier this week. FranGulf’s Mohammed Fazil said the victim’s family will use the compensation to pay for his life-long treatment, adding that Mirza is also suffering from short-term memory loss and has difficulty walking properly.
