12 people have been confirmed dead in the tragedy and 78 others were injured

  LONDON – Twelve people are dead and 78 others were hurt when fire tore through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in North Kensington before dawn yesterday, British police said. Authorities fear that the death toll from the tragedy would rise as many are still unaccounted for and there may be bodies of residents trapped in the tower and died in the inferno. "Sadly I can confirm there are now 12 people that have died that we know of. This is going to be a long and complex recovery operation and I do anticipate that the number of fatalities will sadly increase beyond those 12. I don't anticipate there will be further survivors," London Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy told reporters last night. London fire chief Dany Cotton said the fire incident as "unprecedented", which was reportedly triggered by a faulty ref. The Grenfell Tower had 100 apartments and housed 125 families. The building also had a nursery. Current and former occupants of the tower had long raised safety concerns about the bulding to authorities as questions were raised about whether the exterior cladding that was installed as part of the building's major refurbishment contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. British Prime Minister Theresa May vowed that a "proper investigation" of the tragedy will be conducted as soon as a search and recovery operation in the tower is done. Two hundred firefighters on board 40 firetrucks and 20 ambulance crews rushed to the tower as it was being engulfed in flames. Sixty-five people were rescued from the building. There are reports of witnesses saying that they saw some building occupants jumped off the windows of their units located at the higher floors to escape the flames and children banging on the windows as the fire raged. Meanwhile, Rydon company said its refurbishment work on Grenfell Tower met "all required building control, fire regulation and health and safety standards."
