Delivery drivers in Dubai banned from fast lane
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has banned delivery drivers in Dubai from driving on the left lanes as part of stricter road safety rules. According to a new RTA manual, delivery drivers are also not allowed to use backpacks for deliveries, and must not speed at more than 100 kilometres per hour. Delivery companies will be fined Dh2,000 if their motorcycles are not limited to a maximum speed of 100kmph. Companies that fail to install an RTA-approved system or communication devices on their delivery motorbikes will be fined Dh500 for each vehicle. For delivery drivers, the fine for driving on the fast lane is Dh500, which goes up to Dh700 during a repeat offence. Delivery drivers found violating the rule more than twice will have their permit suspended. Riders caught delivering prohibited items will be fined Dh700. Riders are also not allowed to have pillion rider or passenger during a delivery. Violators will be fined Dh500, with their permit suspended if they repeat the offence for a third time. Riders are not allowed to use a backpack in delivering the orders and will face a fine of Dh500, with a Dh700 fine for a second offence and permit suspension for a third offence. Not wearing protective gear, such as helmet, gloves and reflective jacket, will invite a fine of Dh700. Under the new rules, delivery drivers must “avoid dangerously manoeuvering through traffic” and must wear a protective helmet. Delivery companies found leasing transport from a party not authorised by the Licensing Agency will be fined Dh2,000. Their permit will be suspended if the violation is repeated.
