Unruly passenger tried to open exit door as plane was on its way from Seattle to Beijing

  SEATTLE – A Delta flight bound for Beijing was forced to fly back to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport late Thursday night when a male passenger became unruly, fought with a flight attendant and a passenger, and tried to open the exit door in mid-flight. FBI spokeswoman Ayn Dietrich-Williams said 23-year-old Joseph Daniel Hudek IV of Florida was arrested after the Boeing 767-300ER landed at the Seattle airport. A criminal complaint was filed against Hudek yesterday (Friday). Hudek faces up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $250,000 for intefering with a flight crew. The fracas on Delta Flight 129 occurred at the galley near the cockpit as the plane was flying over Canada's western coast on its way to Beijing with 210 passengers and 11 crew members on board. The complaint stated that Hudek, who was traveling in first class on a dependent travel pass which is given to family members of employees of the airline, attempted to open the forward exit door on the right side of the aircraft and two flight attendants tried to subdue him but he pushed them away. Hudek then continued in his attempt to open the plane's door and was able to move the door handle mechanism and push the emergency release lever halfway. A CNN report quoted the complaint against Hudek as stating that a plane's cabin door cannot be opened at high altitude because of the different pressures inside and outside the jet's cabin, and the plane already was at 32,000 feet when the incident happened. But at a lower altitude, it was possible the door might open, the complaint also said. The flight attendants then asked other passengers for help. During the altercation, Hudek punched a flight attendant twice in the face and hit another assisting passenger with a bottle of wine. Hudek attempted again to open the exit door. Another flight attendant then grabbed two wine bottles and struck Hudek in the head, breaking one of the bottles. Hudek was not affected by the blow to his head. Several other passengers and the flight attendants were able to subdue Hudek and handcuffed him with zip-tie bands. The complaint said Hudek was "extremely combative" as the plane made its way back to Seattle and had to be restrained on his seat by other passengers. Meanwhile, Delta spokesman Perry Cooper said the injured flight attendant and passenger were taken to a hospital. Cooper said did not give further details about their injuries.
