Dengue rapid test kits to be available in Philippine communities soon

  CEBU CITY - As part of its advocacy on preventing the complications caused by dengue, the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) may start rolling out its dengue rapid testing kits to health centers in communities in Central Visayas. Dr. Ronald Jarvik Buscato, dengue health program coordinator, told reporters on Friday that they may start distributing the test kits in September or in October. Buscato admitted that that they are doing this partly because Central Visayas was ranked fourth in the entire country as a dengue hotspot. "We want to have early detection because it is in our advocacy to seek early consultation. Early stages the can be diagnosed so that they can be treated," Buscato said. He added that they are targeting health centers, noting that anyone who is experiencing fever for two to three days may no longer go to the hospitals in the city to undergo ests. In their mid-year census, Buscato said that the ranking of the region is not in the outbreak level considering the number of cases. But with the trend of rising cases every month, it is necessary to intensify their programs against dengue, he added. Based on the August 13 data of DOH-7, there are already 9,372 cases and 81 deaths recorded in the region for both suspected and confirmed cases. Cebu City topped the top 20 list with 1,328 cases and seven deaths. It is followed by Mandaue City with 424 and 9 deaths; Toledo City with 369 cases and two deaths; Lapu-Lapu City with 283 cases and 5 deaths; and Balamban with 280 cases and one death. According to the Dengue Current Situation Report of the DOH-7, the number of cases for this period is 151 percent higher compared to the same period last year which has 3,740 cases and 19 deaths. The increase in dengue cases, Buscato said, that among the factors that contributed to this include the proliferation of dengue virus, proliferation of the dengue vectors which is the dengue mosquito, and the keenness of the physicians to diagnose patients with fever for two to three days to be a dengue cae.
