  DUBAI – Dubai Duty Free (DDF) said passengers departing from Dubai Airports-operated gateways are exempt from paying excise tax imposed on tobacco products but will still pay for the levy imposed on caffeinated sports drinks and softdrinks. Imposition of the excise tax on the aforementioned products took effect last October 1. Reports quoted the DDF as saying that only arriving passengers are covered by the excise tax imposed on tobacco products and only if they purchase more than 400 cigarettes. The UAE had imposed a 100 percent excise tax on tobacco products, 100 percent excise levy on caffeinated sports drinks and 50 percent excise tax on softdrinks beginning last Sunday. A DDF spokesman said: "All tobacco products will be free of excise on departures and will be subject to current customs allowances on arrivals. Carbonated and energy drinks across all of our locations will be subject to excise as they will be presumed to be consumed after purchase." Meanwhile, cigar dealers in the UAE fear that the excise tax could adversely affect the cigar industry as the most expensive cigars on sale would double in price to Dh700 because of the excise tax but according to the DDF, those cigars in airports in Dubai are tax-exempt.
