Scammers have launched a new phishing scheme in the UAE, targeting Dubai residents with emails falsely claiming a refund from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Joseph D. (name withheld), a long-time Dubai expat, shared his experience with Expat Media, saying he received an email claiming he was eligible for a refund of Dh1,800.23. The email contained an embedded link asking him to confirm his details. “To ensure a smooth and timely refund, please click the button below to confirm your details and complete the process,” the email stated. Joseph said the email appeared suspicious, particularly since he still had an outstanding utility bill with DEWA. “That made me seriously doubt the email,” he said. His suspicions were confirmed when he clicked the link, which redirected him to a payment site mimicking DEWA’s interface but with a questionable website: s126sz.blogspot.com. “This is the first time I have received such an email, and I hope other people won’t fall victim to such scams,” he added. DEWA has repeatedly warned the public about scammers posing as their representatives. The authority clarified that legitimate communication from DEWA comes from their official email addresses: noreply.greenbill@dewa.gov.ae or dewa@dewa.gov.ae. Customers were also urged to make payments exclusively through DEWA’s official channels, including its app and website. Phishing schemes like these often target individuals unfamiliar with digital fraud tactics. DEWA has emphasized vigilance, urging the public to verify suspicious communication and report scams to the relevant authorities. Cybersecurity experts advise never to click on links from unknown sources or share personal information.
