Misuse of electrical appliances and electrical wirings can spark fires in your home this summer, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) warned UAE residents. The authority urged residents to conduct periodic maintenance of electrical appliances and connections, especially with the increasing summer temperatures. It also stressed on the importance of using original and high-quality electrical appliances that meet safety standards and hiring accredited technicians to carry out installation and maintenance. Here are some tips from DEWA:

No overloading

Make sure that appliances, including electrical connections, extensions, wires and plugs, stay within their capacity or operation limits. Avoid connecting multiple devices to electrical supply sources that exceed their capacity.

Cover internal connections

Cover wires using proper insulation and be careful of exposed wires and damaged electrical parts, which should be replaced immediately or covered with insulated tape until replaced. Ensure that electrical wires do not pass through corridors, doors, or windows.

When using iron, electric kettle or electric oven

To protect heat-producing devices like iron, electric kettle or electric over, plug them directly without using an extension cord. Pay attention to electric kettles when switching them on, making sure there is sufficient water during operation and the power source is disconnected once you have finished using them.

Keep appliances away from flammable objects

Make sure that electrical appliances are placed in a visible and well-ventilated area, away from fabrics and curtains. Prevent dust from accumulating on them and ensure adequate ventilation behind the electrical appliances, such as the refrigerator and the wall.

Hire accredited technicians

Use the services of a competent, accredited technician to carry out regular maintenance work. For emergencies, call DEWA on 991. ICA/Expat Media
