Dh1 million hospital bill shocks mother of triplets

  DUBAI - Joy has turned to a mix of fear and worry for a 34-year-old woman from Seychelles who gave birth to triplets in Dubai after her hospital bill mounted to Dh1 million. Cynthia Desir's babies were born prematurely on June 10 and required special hospital care. The company providing her insurance cover has already paid Dh2 million in hospital bills for her two baby boys and baby girl. After weeks in hospital care, one of the boys died due to renal failure, while her baby girl is battling for her life in intensive care due to chronic lung disease. “Doctors say she will have to be kept in their care for at least another month. That’s another Dh150,000 to Dh200,000 on top of Dh700,000 I already owe the hospital,” Desir told XPRESS, adding that the insurance company has stopped paying her expenses after the coverage limit was reached. “Thinking about the huge amount of bills, I cannot even sleep or eat, forget about caring for my newborns,” Desir said. The hospital, in a statement, said it was "considering all elements to facilitate and ease the financial terms for the neonatal care this complex case requires".
