RTA hikes fine for illegal drivers in Dubai from Dh5,000 to Dh20,000

  DUBAI – The fine for individuals illegally providing transportation services in Dubai has been increased from Dh5,000 to Dh20,000, an official of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said. Drivers without permits provide what is commonly known as “carlift” services, hooking customers with offers of cheaper transportation rates than taxis. However, such service is illegal. Anyone using a private car as a taxi or offering a carpooling service is violating the law, which came into force in 2004. Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said on Tuesday (May 31) that a new resolution has been approved regarding transport services. “The resolution specifies the administrative penalties related to transporting passengers by taxis or limousines illegally. It prohibits practising the activity before obtaining the permit required from the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, and clearing the approved training courses for drivers stipulated in this regard,” Al Ali said. Under the new resolution, companies that allow unauthorised persons to operate a taxi or limousine will be fined Dh20,000. Those who transport passengers on vehicles not licensed for this purpose within the emirate or from Dubai to any other emirate will also be fined Dh20,000. While there is no fine for passengers availing of such services, RTA officials discourage people from using illegal transport services as it may compromise their safety. The RTA has made repeated reminders that drivers of these illegal taxis are not trained to work as taxi drivers and it can be a security risk for passengers.
