Dh29 million money scheme in UAE a scam: Dubai authority

  DUBAI - UAE residents were warned about a new scam that promises to give them a cash payout of Dh29 million if they invest just $4,000. The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) on Sunday (April 2) issued an advisory warning people about the latest scam, saying that scammers were using a fake DFSA letterhead to prey on unsuspecting customers. "The DFSA alerts the financial services community and the public about a fraudulent advance fee scam using a false DFSA document," according to the DFSA in its advisory. It also advised people to avoid responding to any communication related to the scam and "under no circumstances should they send any money to any party involved in the scam". In the latest scam, fraudsters send fake letters bearing the DFSA logo, claiming that they will be given 6.3 million pounds (Dh29 million) if they transfer an "activation fee" worth $4,000. The letter reads: "We are please(d) to let you know that the account has met the rules and regulations for the 21 days mandate at the maturity of the account, which permit this institution to give the approval for the transfer of 6.3 million pounds sterling." The DFSA said it has not authorised the transfer of funds to consumers and that "scammers have fraudulently used the name of the DFSA without authority and for malicious purposes."
