Dh3.3 million theft case: 3 beaten in Dubai hotel room

  DUBAI – Three men working for money exchange houses in Dubai were allegedly lured into a hotel room by a man posing as a client and were beaten up by a gang that stole a total of Dh3.3 million from them. At the Dubai court, the Indian victims said a Jordanian businessman contacted them to have $1 million changed to dirhams. “I called up a colleague and told him about the deal... we contacted with another employee at another exchange house to arrange the money. Then we headed to the hotel room where we met the suspects,” one of them testified in court. Four African men allegedly showed up at the hotel room in Al Muraqqabat. “At first they took out a bundle of dollars from a black bag and one of them pretended to be counting. After he finished counting the first bundle, he put his hands inside the bag and we thought that he was going to take out another bundle to continue counting ... then all of a sudden, he took out a knife and his accomplices also brandished sharp tools,” he said, describing the incident. He said that they “were threatened, gagged, tied with ropes and kept on the floor”. He said that the gang then fled with their money and mobile phones. The incident was reported to the police, whose investigation led to the arrest of six Cameroonian men and two Malians. A Cameroonian man who drove the gang to the hotel was the first to be arrested in Dubai Marina. Police recovered in his possession Dh56,000 of the stolen cash. A second suspect was arrested in Al Satwa, and police recovered Dh21,000 from him. Three other suspects were arrested in Al Ain and were also found in possession of stolen money. Prosecutors on Thursday accused six of the men of assault and theft, while two other accused were charged with possession of Dh3.3 million in stolen cash. Two Malians and a Cameroonian pleaded guilty to the charges and said that the other five suspects were not involved in the heist. The trial continues.
