Dh30,000 bribe offer lands man in Dubai jail

  DUBAI - A businessman who offered Dh30,000 to a Dubai Customs official to allow a boat carrying illegal fireworks to sail out of Dubai has been sentenced to two years in jail. “It was not a bribe… I intended to pay the customs fees of the fireworks,” the 31-year-old Iranian businessman told the Dubai Court of First Instance. The judge ruled that the Iranian will be deported after serving his sentence. The boat was carrying cargo that belonged to the Iranian. The boxes were labelled as containing proteins. However, upon closer inspection, customs officials found that 10 of the boxes contained undeclared fireworks. A senior customs inspector said that the Iranian initially offered him a bribe of Dh10,000. "When I informed my supervisor about the offer, my superior commissioned me to arrange a sting operation with the police to have the defendant apprehended.
