Abu Dhabi police to message violators via text

Following a unique initiative launched by the Abu Dhabi Police, motorists in the emirate have reported receiving messages warning them of minor traffic violations instead of fines. On the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road in Abu Dhabi, it was recently stated that violating the minimum speed limit of 120 kmph would result in a Dh400 fine. Police said that the limit only applies to the first and second lanes from the left and does not apply to big vehicles. If necessary, slower-moving cars may utilize the third lane, which is exempt from the minimum speed requirement. According to the authority, warning notices would be sent to anyone caught in April breaching the minimum speed limit in designated lanes. The fine will be in effect starting on May 1. It appears that this regulation is now in force because those who violate the minimum speed restriction on this road do receive text warnings. "We regret to inform you were spotted committing violation driving below minimum speed limit in Abu Dhabi," a text message reads. "Your safety is our goal," the text continues by stating that this is why the offender was given a warning rather than a fine. "We hope for you to abide by the traffic rules and wish you safety." The date of the violation and the kind of vehicle the perpetrator was operating are also included in the text. The policy was put into place by Abu Dhabi Police last year, with the explanation that warnings rather than fines would be given to drivers for infractions of minor traffic laws. In the first half of 2022, the authority sent out over 25,000 warning messages to drivers, adding that a campaign is a tool for raising awareness of the value of adhering to traffic laws in the UAE.
